Peer Support Toolkit

Although the vast majority of people attempt lifestyle change on an annual basis, fewer than 20 percent succeed. Peer support represents an important strategy for providing the ongoing support people need to achieve and maintain their lifestyle goals. Peer support can be offered by friends, housemates, family and coworkers.

The Peer Support Toolkit is designed to enhance the quantity and quality of peer support for healthy lifestyle choices. The toolkit helps develop seven primary skills for mutual support: (1) establishing trust and openness, (2) setting lifestyle change goals, (3) identifying wellness role models, (4) eliminating barriers to change, (5) locating supportive environments, (6) working through setbacks, and (7) celebrating success.
